June 16, 2021, marked the beginning of a new era for the voice of recovery. Nothing about us without us!

Over 175 Recovery Champions from around Florida gathered at the Brannon Center in New Smyrna Beach, FL to collaborate with various State leaders and begin the conversation to create Florida’s recovery initiatives. Participants included leaders from: Florida’s Recovery Community Organizations, The Department of Children and Families (DCF), Florida’s seven managing entities, many treatment centers throughout the state, Sheriff Departments, recovery professionals, and many others.

The Georgia Council on Substance Abuse (GCSA) facilitated the discussion to assist Florida create a plan to build a statewide recovery movement utilizing appreciative inquiry. We discussed our strengths, values, and guiding principles and explored areas of opportunity. Neil Campbell, the Executive Director of the GCSA, started her recovery journey in Florida in 1990 and has “had a soft spot for the people in recovery in the Sunshine State since then.” She and the GCSA team, left us with three themes:

  1. The conversation is different when recovery is in the room
  2. People support what they help to create
  3. Our intention creates our reality

Recovery Champions in attendance left the summit inspired, motivated, and empowered to continue the expansion the recovery initiatives in their local community, and were ready to join the statewide effort of supporting recovery initiatives. Our next steps…Commit to Action!
