Floridians for Recovery – Commit to Action Florida Recovery Leadership Summit Phase II

The Commit to Action gathering took place on August 17, 2021, where Recovery Leaders from around Florida joined together keep the conversation moving around Florida’s recovery initiatives and messaging.

The morning gathering started with the Recovery Leadership Summit video. We welcomed a special guest from the Department of Children and Families, Erica Floyd Thomas, Assistant Secretary for Substance Abuse and Mental Health, who offered words of encouragement to all that are working in the recovery.  Dr. Haner Hernandez charged Florida with finding ways to develop and implement culturally and linguistically inclusive programs for recovery to eliminate health disparities to build equity in Florida.

GCSA’s Neil Campbell, Executive Director of GCSA, and Brian Kite, Project Coordinator, led Florida in the process of answering ten “How Might We…” questions that came from the Summit:

  1. How might we…Work together to advocate for designated funding for RCOs?
  2. How might we…Create effective statewide/local stigma reduction campaigns?
  3. How might we…Ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion are authentic, representative of all groups, and lift all voices?
  4. How might we…Stay connected locally, regionally, statewide, & nationally?
  5. How might we…Elevate, prepare, and continually engage peer support specialists in ways that ensure the peer voice is heard and enhance the peer workforce?
  6. How might we…Increase education opportunities for communities?
  7. How might we…Advocate for FFR’s recognition as the statewide RCO and support for their funding to continue the growth of the RCO network?
  8. How might we…Collaborate to educate on and increase harm reduction & services & multiple pathway options?
  9. How might we…Build up a state advocacy initiative, or day, to share the message that recovery is possible?
  10. How might we…Spur more organizations, local governments, and foundations to support sustainability for RCOs?

Florida leaders again, left the Commit to Action gathering inspired, empowered, and ready to advance Florida recovery initiatives. Workgroups have been formed for the top recovery initiatives:  Funding, Harm Reduction/Multiple Pathways, Peer Workforce, and Stigma.  If you are interested in joining one of the workgroups, please let us know. We have a lot of work still do to and we know, “slow and steady wins the race.”

The opportunity to engage with members of the recovery community now, as they organize into a meaningful constituency, is truly a gift. There is so much energy and excitement to get involved in building community around recovery supports that I know it will be successful. It’s going to be fun to watch!

Neil Campbell, Executive Director, GCSA
