Compassion Fatigue: Additional Risks While Serving Vulnerable Populations During a Crisis

“The expectation that we can be immersed in suffering and loss daily and not be touched by it is as unrealistic as expecting to be able to walk through water without getting wet.” – Dr. Rachel Remen

When working with vulnerable populations, it is inevitable that service providers will be impacted by exposure to trauma. The risk for compassion fatigue is heightened when serving people experiencing crisis, and in the context of the current pandemic. Although the fields of substance use treatment and mental health services emphasize the importance of self-care, we don’t often offer robust tools for assessing providers’ needs, access adequate resources for managing the risks of serving vulnerable populations during a crisis or address the need to implement organizational and systemic responses to compassion fatigue. This webinar will focus on exploring the ways that human service providers are affected by their work, particularly during crisis, with an emphasis on applying trauma-informed principles to manage compassion fatigue. Attendees will learn how to recognize signs of compassion fatigue as well as both personal and organizational resources that enhance worker resilience.
